Mayor's Neighborhood Advisory Committee

MNAC: The Mayor's Neighborhood Advisory Commission met July 11th.

After informative reports from various neighborhoods we learned two news items from the City. Following earlier discussions on the possible need for liability insurance for neighborhood associations, we were provided with a quote on a group rate available through MNAC. For approximately $140 per association per year, each one could have $2,000,000 in coverage. We were told more information would follow via email to the Presidents and MNAC representatives.

The planning Department is embarking on a Development Code Project; its aim is to rewrite the Bellingham Municipal Code as it pertains to development to enhance predictability for all. Phase #1 will be to format and rearrange for clarity, and Phase #2 will be to look at what issues exist now that are creating problems in the community, then try address them and clean them up.

Coalition of Southside Neighborhoods

Coalition of Southside Neighborhoods (CSN): The CSN Candidate Forum on July 19th was very well attended and went smoothly. The CSN Steering Committee is now in the process of planning a second forum, after the primary results are established, and before the general election November 6th (ballots will be mailed October 17th).  We expect this forum to have a different format and hope Edgemoor residents will join us. Please watch for further details as they become available.

Growth and Land Use Report

The Planning Commission met July 19th to look at the proposed project at 12th an Donovan. The positives indicated included that the gas station would be gone (not considered a positive by all) there would be no longer a risk of leaking tanks, waste water would be controlled, and additional housing provided. Concerns raised included a conviction that the proposed structure is one story too tall, that it is unattractive, and that its construction will limit mitigation efforts for the 12th Street/Padden Creek Bridge.
