ENA President's Update

I certainly hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and enjoying the weather.  Don’t we live in a great place!

Well, by what I am hearing, the 1st annual ENA picnic was a huge success with a great turn out and people having fun and getting to know each other.  I want to commend all and thank the Hospitality Committee and volunteers for all the work that went into putting this event together.  Great job.  The door hangers were a great touch.

I am sure you found last month’s meeting very informative regarding development of the Fairhaven Highlands project.  We certainly appreciate Responsible Development speaking at that meeting.  Please feel free to let us know your feelings about this development and the ideas presented by Responsible Development.

As some of you already know, one of our Safety Committee Chairs has stepped down due to family reasons.  We want to thank Donna for all her efforts and contributions to the safety of our neighborhood.  We wish her well.  Thank you, Donna.

Lastly and very importantly, let’s have another great turnout and show our support for National Night Out Against Crime August 2nd at the Bayside Swimming Club – 8:00 to 11:00 pm.  Let’s make our neighborhood safe, crime free and let’s to get to know each other.

Respectfully, Niall Hackett, Interim President

Edgemoor Neighborhood Representative

Sherry Miller (Gustafson)TIME FLIES...

It is almost August and for many of us life moves too fast.  We are juggling busy schedules and need to be reminded that it is okay to take a moment to relax.  Summer is here.  The days are long and at times should be lazy.  It is a good season to visit with friends, sit outside, catch up on reading, and enjoy the garden.

Think about what you love about where you live.  While searching for something to read (outside if possible) consider the Comprehensive Plan.  If it is important to preserve whatever it is you love about Edgemoor then become informed and involved.  Sherry Miller and Brad Rose would like to hear your thoughts and comments concerning the plan.  So grab a lemonade, a copy of the Comprehensive Plan, and a seat in the shade…napping occasionally is allowed!

ENA Committee Highlights

Communications Committee

Sandie, Lauri, Diane and I just want to thank all of you who helped us distribute the door hangers inviting our members to our 1st annual ENA picnic.  Personally I had a wonderful time walking the neighborhood which I do a few times a week but you do get a different perspective when you actually walk up to each home’s door. There are some lovely hidden retreats that homeowners in our neighborhood have created that you don’t have a chance to enjoy from the road.  I found our neighbors so friendly and excited to hear about ENA. Thanks to Sandie and her great idea of door hangers we were able to reach everyone in our neighborhood and let them know about our organization.  I hope that all of you who helped us met some new neighbors and enjoyed your tour of the neighborhood as much as I did.

Committee Chair, Kathy Kaiser

Growth and Land Use Committee

ENA Growth and Land Use Committee Report - This month the ENA Growth and Land Use Committee spent a lovely Tuesday evening walking throughout Fairhaven stopping at all development sites that are Proposed, Under Review, Approved or Under Construction.  In all we surveyed 17 distinct sites of varying size and purpose.  I feel that is was a success and will plan on conducting another such an outing in the future.

There are a couple of land use issues of interest for this report - More detail and links to the full notices follow this report.

1.      The Hearing Examiner's review of the proposed 10,279 sq. ft single family home at 826 Briar Road - (The newly opened Madrona Point North sub-division).  The 10,279 sq. ft. is up from the 8,554 sq ft. that was stated in the original application.  This meeting will take place on Wednesday July 27, 2005 at 7:00 in the City Council Chambers.

2.      A Substantial Shoreline development Permit was submitted by the U.S. Coast Guard, requesting to build a 120-foot long pier adjacent to the Cruise Terminal.

3.      The Planning Department will hold a public hearing to address a proposal to increase the density of Units/Sq. ft and allow Office space at the property located at 1314 Old Fairhaven Pkwy

That’s about all to report this month.  Get out and enjoy what makes this place the best on earth.

Hospitality Committee

The hospitality committee would like to thank everyone involved in making the first ENA summer picnic a fun time for all.  It was even the perfect day to have a picnic and to splash in the water at Fairhaven Park.  About 80 neighbors were there enjoying the day and the event. We would especially like to thank the people who were there to help. Sandie ordered and brought a beautiful cake celebrating the first anniversary of the ENA, and our husbands were all there helping to set everything up and pack it all away again.

Thanks, also, to everyone who took time out of their busy (sometimes hectic) schedules to share food and conversation with their neighbors. All of us in the hospitality committee feel it is very important to bring people together so that we can share, enjoy, and support each other in our neighborhood. We are excited about the opportunity to plan more events like this in the future.

Now that the picnic is behind us, we can put some energy into another committee task: welcoming new neighbors. I have been collecting ideas, and welcome any input that you may have about what form this should take. If you have ever been welcomed into a new neighborhood and would like to share positive (or negative) memories, please send an email to Laurie Renne, Membership committee chair

Membership

Neighborhood Safety Committee

National Night Out Against Crime

On Tuesday, August 2nd, from 8-9pm we will have chairs and tables set up in the gravel parking lot at Bayside Swimming Club for residents to come and meet their neighbors and ask any questions they may have about the Block Watch Program from a police representative. Many blocks will be hosting their first Block Watch meeting at this event.

This is a potluck party, please bring your favorite dish for sharing, and your own utensils and drinks; no alcohol is allowed. Please do not park in the Bayside Pool parking lot from 8-9pm, but park on Willow Road only. Once the pool closes at 9pm, we will move the party into the pool facility and have use of the pool from 9-11pm.

Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25

We have “Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25” yard signs and window clings available for purchase.  You may have seen them in the neighborhood already.  The signs are $15 and the window clings $3.  Please contact Veronica Douglas if you are interested.

Neighbors in the Know:

This is a new section of the newsletter with tips and tidbits from Edgemoor residents.

A quick and easy salad (served at the ENA picnic):

TOP RAMEN SALAD

1/2 Head of Cabbage

3 Green Onions, chopped

1 Package TOP RAMEN

(Crush Noodles and save flavor pack)

DRESSING:

1/2 C Olive Oil

2 t Vinegar

2 T Sugar

1 Flavor Pack from TOP RAMEN

Toast  2T Sesame Seeds and Sunflower Seeds and 1/2 C Sliced Almonds

Mix dressing together and toss with top 3 ingredients when ready to serve.

Horsetail Hint: Lilly Miller Blackberry and Brush Killer works well on “horsetail”.  It kills the horsetail within a few days and then the dried up weeds are easy to pull up.  The only trick is to apply the brush killer when a few dry days are expected.
