Coalition
of Southside Neighborhoods
The
Coalition of Southside Neighborhoods formed in January of 2005, when
representatives from five Southside neighborhoods came together to explore
areas of common interest and concern. Coalition members have met
continuously since that time, most often at the Fairhaven Library.
An
early mission statement developed by the Coalition is as follows:
The Coalition of Southside Neighborhoods
(CSN) exists for the purpose of coordinating strategic efforts to preserve
the character of our respective neighborhoods, to maintain and improve our
quality of life and to strengthen citizen participation in Bellingham’s
public process.
The CSN will share pertinent information among its constituents
and may plan periodic social events open to all southsiders.
The CSN will hold regular delegate meetings, periodic general
meetings and establish committees as needed. The CSN will seek to work
cooperatively with the City of Bellingham, the Port of Bellingham, Western
Washington University and the southside business community. The CSN will
issue statements and initiate actions only when endorsed by its affiliated
neighborhood associations. The CSN recognizes the right of southside
citizens to initiate independent community projects and political actions as
long as they do not represent themselves as doing so in the name of CSN.
The
Coalition of Southside Neighborhoods (CSN) is now organized by a Steering
Committee comprised of Presidents and Representatives from each of the five
neighborhoods (Edgemoor, Fairhaven, Happy Valley, South and South Hill).
CSN will continue to offer programs of communitywide interest
as such interests are identified. Steering Committee members will continue
work on behalf of southside citizens empowered by linking back to the
general membership of each neighborhood organization.
